Recommendations for Elders and Deacons
We invite you to prayerfully consider either yourself or other church members who you believe may have a calling to serve the church at this time.
What are we looking for?
DEACONS are charged with the sympathy, witness and service for all our members. Both individually and collectively (as the Diaconate), deacons provide leadership in the areas of compassion, membership/hospitality, and pastoral care.
As you prayerfully consider candidates for Deacons please consider that Deacons are the "servants" or "caregivers" of the congregation. In this large congregation, people have all kinds of needs--they are recovering from surgery, grieving, lonely, ill or otherwise in a time where they welcome the ministry of care from our congregation. In a very real way, Deacons are the hands and heart of the Church in our ministry of caring. Serving as a Deacon of the First Presbyterian Church is a privilege and a blessing. It is also an opportunity for spiritual growth and fellowship. Deacons are given the opportunity to know other church members in a deeper way, serving alongside them and growing in your understanding of the burdens people carry and how the church can help.
ELDERS are charged with the oversight of the life of our congregation--leading, governing and guiding its members. Both individually and collectively (as the Session), elders provide leadership in worship, teaching, mission, evangelism, care and nurture. Elders should be persons of faith, dedication and good judgment, and should be regular participants in the church’s worship, nurture and service.
As you prayerfully consider candidates for Elder please consider, Ruling elders are so named not because they “lord it over” the congregation (Matt. 20:25), but because they are chosen by the congregation to discern and measure its fidelity to the Word of God, and to strengthen and nurture its faith and life. Ruling elders, together with the Pastors, exercise leadership, government, spiritual discernment and discipline and have responsibilities for the life of a congregation as well as the whole church.
As you consider officers please keep these requirements in mind: To qualify, candidates must be a member for at least one year, a faithful participant in worship and the life of First Presbyterian Church, and a financial steward who faithfully contributes to its ministry. Nominated Deacons and Elders will be required to attend Officer Training in the Spring (dates TBD).
